Are you looking for information on PDA?![]()
www.facebook.com/100066516040555/posts/692135956346933/We've got a few spaces remaining on our next What is PDA course specifically for male parents and carers. The course is running on Monday from 7pm. ![]()
This is a great opportunity to hear from two fantastic speakers who both have experience as fathers of PDA children. In addition, our trainers will be giving an overview of what PDA is and sharing some approaches that might be beneficial. ![]()
Tickets for this course are just £25 and can be booked here: www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/what-is-pda-for-male-parents-and-carers-of-pda-children-and-adults-tickets...
Have you been considering a reader pen of some type? I've recently been introduced to the OrCam pens and they seem to have progressed since the initial introduction of reader pens. They look more efficient and have more facilities on them. I've written a short blog here.

I'm sure this will be a controversial subject. Literacy and numeracy levels. Should they be lowered on apprenticeships?

Shared from Michael Charles SEN lawyer ![]()
10 Common but disappointing local authority quotes that fuel scepticism and anger.![]()
1. "We do not have to consider your private independent reports."
Answer. Yes you do. Independent is surely the relevant word. Independence means just that. Not self serving or constrained from making recommendations due to budget. The regulations in England also require you to consider evidence that the parent reasonably requests.![]()
2. "Your child is too bright to have an IDP/EHCP.![]()
Answer. Wrong again. A child is entitled to support if they have a learning disability that calls for special educational provision to be made. Bright children may still have a disability requiring specific support. ![]()
3. We will not consider placing a child at independent school.![]()
Answer. Yes it should if state provision cannot either meet needs or do so efficiently. ![]()
4." It is for the school to deliver the appropriate support and fund the extra help. It has a devolved budget" . ![]()
Answer. A school does have to use best endeavours to meet needs but a local authority is bound to comply with an IDP or EHCP by law. It is also obliged to adequately fund the provision. ![]()
5. "We will not be able to allow your lawyer to the meeting." ![]()
Answer. Why not? Is this code for "we want to do things wrong and hope nobody finds out?" or "we are entitled to lawyers to help us but as a parent you should be expected to do as we say?". Furthermore a lawyer can be invited to a mediation meeting if you require. ![]()
6. "We will never fund ABA" . ![]()
Answer. This may be what a council intends but such a statement is not lawful and neither is it reflective of its statutory duty. A policy of this kind is discriminatory and can and should be challenged.![]()
7. "We will not implement the therapy recommendations in your report because we need to await NHS advice." ![]()
Answer. All therapists have same professional obligations. This is not an answer to not appropriately respecting professional recommendations for the benefit of a child. Besides the law requires the council to consider all of the evidence.![]()
8." One to one support is unhelpful as it compromises independence. "![]()
Answer. This might be partially true (sometimes), but if it is needed and often in special needs cases it is required for various reasons, it should be provided. It is the skill in the delivery and use that is the key. . If used correctly and appropriately it can be very beneficial. Education is all about building skills to ultimately be independent. If one needs a little more help along the way then one is entitled to it. One to one however is not a substitute for good professional and sometimes specialist teaching. It is there to reinforce and support teaching not a substitute for it.![]()
9. "Please relay your questions to us rather than to the school?![]()
Answer. Why not? The school is at the front line and better placed to help and its plays the most important part. Why try and restrict the passage of information? Evidence gathering should be transparent. Transparency resolves and reduces conflict. ![]()
10." If you appeal the plan or IDP the local authority will obtain its own reports." ![]()
Answer. Surely it would have obtained all the necessary reports as part of its assessment. It is duty bound to prepare a proper up to date plan. Quality plans or IDPs should not depend on whether a family appeals. What happened to the idea of doing a job properly from the start?![]()
A sad fact emerges...![]()
Over the years during which I have dealt with these cases rarely if ever, have I seen a statement of Sen (those historical documents) IDP or EHCP that was legally worth the paper it was written on, without it having been the finished product of dispute and careful legal intervention.
